CCI Statement on the Liberal Party of Canada Leadership Results

March 9, 2025

Today, the Liberal Party of Canada elected Mark Carney as their new leader. In the coming days, he will be sworn-in as Canada's 24th prime minister. In response to the results, CCI President Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement on behalf of our members:

"On behalf of our members, we’d like to congratulate Mark Carney on being elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, and Canada’s next Prime Minister.

"The American trade war represents an existential threat to the Canadian economy, and we urgently need to see a strategy to defend our sovereignty and create future prosperity. Canada’s innovators are building the solutions that will define the next era of technology growth, and they can be the backbone of our future economic resilience. The federal government must step up with a strategic policy agenda that enables high-growth firms to scale, commercialize, and lead in a volatile global economy.

"Canada doesn’t have any time to waste; now is the time to unite Canadians behind a clear economic vision that ensures our national sovereignty is protected. We cannot remain strong and free without a thriving economy."

Last week, CCI released What Canadian Innovators Need to Scale—our 2025 federal election primer outlining the policy changes needed to strengthen Canada’s innovation economy. The report highlights eight critical priorities:

1. Make Canada’s Tax System Globally Competitive

2. Strengthen Canada’s Security and Economic Resilience

3. Own and Commercialize Canadian Intellectual Property (IP)

4. Reform Underperforming Government Incentive Programs

5. Seize the AI and Deep Tech Opportunity

6. Modernize Governance to Support Innovation

7. Adopt a Strategic Approach to Trade

8. Use Government Procurement to Drive Innovation

This document has been shared with all political parties, and we will continue advocating for these solutions to drive Canadian prosperity. By adopting these measures, the federal government can ensure Canada’s firms have the tools to scale, keeping the jobs, wealth, and technologies of the future here—not abroad.
