CCI Statement on Temporary U.S. Tariff Pause

February 3, 2025

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he had negotiated a 30-day pause with U.S. President Donald Trump on tariffs targeting Canadian goods, offering a temporary reprieve for businesses across the country. While this pause provides short-term relief, it does little to address the broader, long-term threat posed by American protectionism.

In response to the tariff pause, CCI President Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement on behalf of our members:

"The 30-day pause on U.S. tariffs represents a reprieve for the Canadian economy, but the threat remains just as clear and present. This aggression was never just about border security and fentanyl, and we can count on Donald Trump to come back demanding more concessions from us later, backed by the same old threats.

"The most encouraging thing we’ve seen over the past 48 hours is a unified approach to Canadian economic sovereignty among our business, political and community leaders. Governments are committing to buy Canadian, to reduce interprovincial trade barriers, and to support the growth of our homegrown businesses. At CCI we have been calling for exactly this kind of approach for years.

"Canada should spend this reprieve building up our economic resilience, and developing policies that put us on the strongest possible footing to respond to American aggression."
