CCI Response to the 2025 Ontario Throne Speech
April 15, 2025
Today, Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont delivered the Speech from the Throne at Queen’s Park, marking the start of a new legislative session.
In response, CCI’s Director of Ontario Affairs, Skaidra Puodžiūnas, issued the following statement:
“Today’s Speech from the Throne made clear that Ontario is under pressure. Economic headwinds are mounting, and trade hostilities with the U.S. continue to grow. The government’s message was direct: Ontario must rethink how prosperity is built.
"That means moving beyond outdated economic models. The path forward lies in value-added strategies that drive long-term growth and better jobs—especially in high-potential sectors like healthcare innovation, cybersecurity, and digital services. These are areas where Ontario can lead globally, if we choose to back domestic firms instead of defaulting to foreign suppliers.
"Last month, 75 CEOs from Ontario-based innovation firms signed an open letter to Premier Ford, urging the government to put forward a bold, made-in-Ontario economic strategy. Today’s Throne Speech echoed some of that call—but now it’s time to act.
"Procurement reform remains one of the most powerful—and underused—economic levers we have. A coordinated, whole-of-government approach can unlock Ontario-made technologies, improve public services, and ensure taxpayer dollars are building prosperity here at home.
"With the election behind us and MPPs back at Queen’s Park, this is the moment for Premier Ford and his cabinet to deliver a homegrown economic plan that meets the urgency of today and sets Ontario on a path to long-term economic sovereignty and success.”
