What we heard from the 2021 Throne Speech

November 22, 2021

Today in Ottawa, Governor-General Mary Simon delivered the Liberal government’s Throne Speech, laying out the priorities of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.

In response to the government’s Throne Speech, CCI Executive Director Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement:

“Throughout 2021, we have been calling on the Government of Canada to do more to plan for Canada’s economic future after the pandemic. Today, we were pleased to hear the government’s forward-looking emphasis on a resilient future economy. Now is the time to create the conditions for future prosperity, and an innovative 21st century economy based on green technologies and knowledge-based jobs must be at the centre of the conversation.

“Across Canada, high-growth technology companies have continued to drive growth and job creation, and CCI members are eager to work with the government to ensure sustained success in the 21st century innovation economy. Now is the time to take a comprehensive approach — in co-operation with provinces — to address our national skilled talent crisis, which is the number one challenge facing Canada’s scale-up companies. It’s also time for the federal government to demonstrate progress on updating Canada’s regulatory frameworks around data privacy, introducing an open banking regime, acting on digital competition reform, and increasing supports for innovators commercializing intangible assets like intellectual property and data.

“In particular, we welcomed the Throne Speech’s declaration that innovation and good, green jobs will be essential for the future economy. Our members are Canada’s homegrown experts on driving growth in the global digital economy and are standing by, ready to work with the government to drive prosperity for Canada.”
