Election Briefing: What B.C. Innovators Need to Scale

September 24, 2024

As the British Columbia election campaign formally gets underway, we’re expecting a vigorous debate on the issues affecting the province.

B.C. NDP Leader David Eby, B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad and other political leaders will be talking about health care, education, affordability, housing and more.

But there’s one issue that underpins all of those issues: Without a growing and thriving economy, British Columbia will not be able to pay for the public services we all value.

On behalf of our 25 members in British Columbia, the Council of Canadian Innovators has drafted a policy brief for political parties in this election campaign.

Our message is straightforward. We know how what it takes to build a more innovative economy:

  • Drive economic growth through Strategic Procurement
  • Enhance Capital Support for innovators and entrepreneurs
  • Protect Canadian Ideas by doubling down on B.C.’s IP strategy
  • Develop a modern Provincial Data Strategy
  • Upskill, retrain and retain top tech talent in B.C.
  • Develop a B.C. AI Strategy to drive growth and innovation

About the Council of Canadian Innovators

The Council of Canadian Innovators is a national member-based organization reshaping how governments across Canada think about innovation policy, and supporting homegrown scale-ups to drive prosperity. Established in 2015, CCI represents and works with over 150 of Canada’s fastest-growing technology companies. Our members are the CEOs, founders, and top senior executives behind some of Canada’s most successful ‘scale-up’ companies. All our members are job and wealth creators, investors, philanthropists, and experts in their fields of health tech, cleantech, fintech, cybersecurity, AI and digital transformation. Companies in our portfolio are market leaders in their verticals, commercialize their technologies in over 190 countries, and generate between $10M-$750M in annual recurring revenue. We advocate on their behalf for government strategies that increase their access to skilled talent, strategic capital, and new customers, as well as expanded freedom to operate for their global pursuits of scale.
