CCI's Statement on the Results of the BC Election

October 29, 2024

More than a week after British Columbians cast their ballots, Elections BC delivered a final result in a razor-tight election. British Columbia is home to a thriving Canadian tech hub in and around Vancouver, and CCI has had productive engagements with the provincial government over the years, working to build strategies to grow the BC tech sector.

In response to the outcome, CCI President Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement:

"On behalf of BC’s scale-up technology companies, I’d like to congratulate Premier David Eby and the NDP on a renewed mandate after a hard-fought campaign. We have watched an incredibly close election result play out over the past week, and now is the time to come together and work collaboratively to deliver for the people of British Columbia.

"During the campaign, we heard the NDP emphasize affordability, good-paying jobs and improved government services as key priorities for the next four years. The truth is that a thriving innovation economy, driven by a critical mass of scale-up technology companies, is the best possible way to create good jobs and clean economic growth.

"During its last mandate, the NDP government built important relationships with the B.C. tech sector, and we look forward to working with Premier Eby and his team to continue that good work. In particular, we hope to see further progress on the B.C. Intellectual Property Strategy, and non-dilutive capital supports for scale-up companies driven by In B.C.

During the campaign, the NDP campaigned on improving healthcare. The best possible way to do this is by adopting innovative technologies which can elevate the quality of care while also making the system operate more efficiently. As the government gets to work on implementing their health care plans, we strongly recommend that Premier Eby and his team take a page out of Buying Ideas and Building Winners, to explore ways to reform government procurement for better results."
