CCI's Response to Alberta's 2024 Fall Economic Statement

November 21, 2024

Today, the Government of Alberta presented its 2024-25 Second Quarter Fiscal Update and Economic Statement, outlining its priorities for the province's economic and fiscal future.

In response to this announcement, CCI’s Director of Prairie Affairs, Jess Sinclair, issued the following statement:

“Finance Minister Nate Horner emphasized the importance of ‘being intentional with every dollar’ in today’s second-quarter fiscal update. The provincial government’s focus on leveraging technology to enhance public services and drive productivity presents a significant opportunity to align political will with the growing momentum in Alberta’s tech sector.

“To sustain and grow Alberta’s innovation ecosystem, the government must finalize strategies in key areas like privacy policy and intellectual property commercialization. Streamlining health technology procurement is another critical step to improving healthcare delivery while fostering innovation. Additionally, Premier Smith’s focus on capital support for scale-up companies should be realized through a targeted fund to support Alberta firms with the greatest potential to create jobs and drive long-term prosperity.

“As the province looks ahead to Budget 2025, we encourage policymakers to consider the recommendations outlined in CCI’s 2025 pre-budget submission, shaped by the insights of Alberta’s most innovative business leaders. These recommendations are designed to ensure Alberta remains a leader in innovation, job creation, and economic resilience.”

“Economic uncertainty, whether from U.S. election results or fluctuating oil prices, should not distract from this work. Alberta’s resilience lies in its ability to create opportunity, and policymakers must act decisively to make that opportunity sustainable for the future.”
