CCI Statement on the 2025 Alberta Budget
February 27, 2025
Today, Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner delivered his 2025 provincial budget. On behalf of our members in Alberta, CCI Director of Prairie Affairs Jess Sinclair made the following statement about the 2025 Alberta Budget:
"It was no surprise that today’s Alberta budget was a lean on new spending; Premier Smith and her ministers have been signalling for weeks that the province needs to be prudent in light of softening oil prices and broad economic uncertainty.
"As Alberta navigates a precarious trade relationship with the U.S., the best possible way to ensure our economic resilience is by building a strong and diversified base of thriving firms here at home. Uncertain times call for government to double-down on low-cost strategic innovation policies that will fortify Alberta’s economy though future commodity price dips and geopolitical flux.
"We are pleased to see that Budget 2025 includes $1.3 billion to streamline services for Albertans through increased digitization. Given the trade hostilities that Minister Horner spoke about in his budget speech, we hope that the government will be looking to Canadian technology companies to help implement this digitization work.
"In the months ahead, we hope to see the government embrace policies that support our homegrown economic resilience, including work to build sovereign compute capacity in Alberta. We also look forward to continuing conversations with Minister Glubish and his team about how the province can move forward on releasing a comprehensive provincial intellectual property commercialization strategy."
