CCI Statement on Ongoing U.S. Trade Hostilities

April 2, 2025

Today in Washington D.C., U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on a long list of countries around the world, along with new auto tariffs. U.S. government will not apply tariffs to USMCA compliant goods, but Trump did announce a 25% tariff on completed automobiles. In response to the news, CCI President Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement on behalf of our members:

"President Trump's announcement changes nothing for Canada's fundamental trade situation with the U.S.

"After months of trade turbulence, one thing is clear: Canada needs a bold, modern economic strategy—one that builds domestic capacity, protects our sovereignty, and positions Canadian companies to lead globally.

"For too long, Canada’s trade strategy has bet on stability in our U.S. relationship. That bet is off. The global economy has changed. So must our strategy.

"What’s needed now is a focused, forward-looking industrial policy: one that supports Canadian firms, drives investment toward high-value sectors, and deploys procurement as a strategic tool.

"This moment isn’t just about tariffs or temporary relief measures. It’s about seizing the opportunity to build a globally competitive, resilient economy that leads to better paycheques for all Canadians and secures long-term prosperity for generations to come. "
