Alberta’s tech PNP program is a win for the economy

Today, the Alberta government announced a new pilot stream for tech workers under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program.

Canada is currently facing a skilled talent shortage in the tech sector, with companies struggling to find enough qualified workers to sustain their rapid growth. In response to the announcement, Bronte Valk, CCI’s Alberta manager of government relations, made the following statement:

More than a year ago, we called on the government to add a tech stream to the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program as part of our 2021 pre-budget submission on behalf of our province’s tech leaders. Today’s Accelerated Tech Pathway announcement is very good news for Alberta scale-up companies, and it shows that the government has listened to the needs of our members and taken action to help Alberta’s tech sector become a larger economic engine in Canada.

In Alberta’s highly-competitive tech sector, where unemployment sits around 0% for computer science and engineering professionals, measures like these are necessary for increasing the talent pool of skilled workers. This new tech stream will allow Alberta’s tech companies to tap into a new pipeline of talent, helping them scale into global companies that drive economic growth and job creation for Albertans here at home.
